- Urea-formaldehyde-type adhesives have the inherent characteristic of giving off free formaldehyde under some conditions of use. The vapor can build up to concentrations which can be a nuisance, uncomfortable, or an actual health hazard. The "formaldehyde problem" is reviewed, from literature sources, in five respects : oriqins, analytical, control and removal, toxicology, and odor and (general methods of) odor control. - PARVCOST, a FORTRAN program, was designed to develop economic and financial analyses of systems for manufacturing particleboard. In the program, costs and requirements of wood are calculated as are chemicals and energy per unit of finished board products. Estimates are made of sensitivity of the finished product costs to changes in unit costs of energy and raw materials. Weight statistics are computed for the finished product and for the profit contribution ratio for values of given products. - The pertinent literature has been reviewed, and the apparent effects of selected processing parameters on the resultant particleboard properties, as generally reported in the literature, have been determined. Resin efficiency, type and level, furnish, and pressing conditions are reviewed for their reported effects on physical, strength, and moisture and dimensional properties. - This literature review was conducted in connection with a study on heat transfer in frozen logs. A combination of data by two researchers on specific heat and thermal conductivity and diffusivity in the radial direction of wood, at various temperatures and moisture contents, is discussed and compared with data from other sources. Limited information found for the tangential and longitudinal directions is also included in the report. - Based on laboratory performance with a number of fire-retardant chemicals, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate-boric acid and dicyandiamide-phosphoric acid-formaldehyde were selected for treating fiber and making 4 foot by 8-foot dry-formed hardboards on a commercial production line. - Under a system that permits mass screening of mycelia within bands of the visible spectrum, fruit bodies initiated and developed in two light bands (387-400nm and 425-430nm) in axenic culture. Either or both of these light bands will trigger fruitbody initiation at as low an energy level as 0.2 K (1 K = 1,000 microwatts/cm2).
