- The Sudbury basin, Ontario is the source of more than 60% of the free world's nickel and is also a major producer of copper, iron, cobalt and other metals. The sulfur dioxide and particulate discharge from the Sudbury smelters have been described and discussed in a number of publications and information will also be presented at the present conference.AuthorsP. - Field studies of photosynthesis in Pinus contorta/Pinus banksiana (lodgepole pine/jack pine) hybrids, Picea glauca (white spruce) and Populus tremuloides (aspen) subjected to SO2 and H2S from a nearby natural gas processing plant were initiated near Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada during the summer of 1974. The site was characterized as a Pinus-Picea glauca/Arctostaphylos uva-ursi association (pine-white spruce/bearberry). A 15 meter high scaffold was used as access to mid-crown foliage in the pines while the spruce and aspen were accessible from the ground. Net assimilation rates, transpiratio...AuthorsA. H. Legge, R. - Hardwood bark fines and two hardwood bark fibers were compared with wood-cellulose fiber and paper fiber mulch to determine their effectiveness as hydromulches in revegetating disturbed soil. The results showed that either bark fines or bark fibers can be utilized as a hydromulch to aid in the revegetation of strip mines, highway construction sites, and similar earth-moving operations.AuthorsDavid M. - Describes the tables derived from the 1968 forest survey of Wisconsin. These tables are broken down according to Wisconsin's 5 Forest Survey Units, 12 forest types, and 5 site index classes. Presents 18 tables as examples of the more than 500 that can be ordered by using the order form enclosed in the publication.AuthorsBurton L. Essex, Jerold T. HahnSourceGeneral Technical Report NC-25. - Describes how to build a housing for the balance used to weigh fuel moisture sticks. The housing is easy to build, low-cost, and can be mounted on the supports of the standard cotton region shelter.AuthorsJohn S. FrostKeywordsSourceResearch Note NC-208. - Hybrid poplar clones were fumigated in controlled-environment chambers with either 5 ppm sulphur dioxide for 1½, 3, and 6 h or with 0.25 ppm sulphur dioxide for six weeks. Multivariate analyses were made from shoot-growth data before and after treatment and on the foliar injury induced by S02. Both short- and long-term fumigation produced similar plant-behaviour responses to the two SO2 concentrations.AuthorsLeon S. Dochinger, Keith F. - Cable logging, once used extensively in the Appalachians, is being re-examined to see if smaller, more mobile systems can help solve some of the timber-managment problems on steep slopes. A small Austrian skyline was tested in West Virginia to determine its feasibility for harvesting enstern hardwoods. The short-term test included both selection and clearcut harvesting. Both yarding costs and environmental effects were analyzed.AuthorsHarry G. Gibson, Cleveland J. BillerSourceJournal of Forestry. 73(10): 649-653.Year1975
- In the Northeast, eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) cannot be relied upon to consistently regenerate naturally due to the destruction of the cone crops by the white pine cone beetle (Conopthorus coniperda Schwarz). The white pine cone beetle has been reported to have destroyed the white pine cone crops for nine consecutive years in one area of southern Maine (Graber 1964). Artificial seeding or planting is necessary to obtain adequate regeneration.AuthorsM. E., Jr. Demeritt, H. - Twenty-two water quality parameters were determined for the streamflow from complex but typical upland-peatland watersheds over a period of 5 yr. Five watersheds with oligotrophic peatlands and one with a minerotrophic peatland were studied. Concentrations of organically derived nutrients are highest in the streamflow from watersheds containing oligotrophic peatlands; while concentrations of nutrients derived from solution of aquifer minerals are higher in streamflow from the watershed containing a minerotrophic peatland. However, flow-weighted concentrations of organically derived...AuthorsElon (Sandy) VerryKeywordsSourceEcology. 56: 1149-1157.Year1975
