- Black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) seedling seed orchards are now being established on the Allegheny and Monongahela National Forests (Fig. 1). It has been estimated that ten to twenty years may be required from the time that a seed orchard is established until it begins to produce large quantities of seed. - Black walnut trees planted as 1-0 seedlings generally show little, if any, net height growth during the first year. Possible reasons for slow first-year growth include transplanting shock, lack of root regeneration, unfavorable environments, and unsuitable genotypes. - A color-slide projection or photograph can be used to determine reactions to an actual scene if the presentation adequately includes most of the elements in the scene. - Long-term preservation (no cutting) of a deciduous forest stand in New Hampshire is leading toward stable populations of beech, sugar maple, striped maple, mountain maple, and hobblebush, coupled with a decline or complete disappearance of other woody species. The humus has stabilized at a depth no greater than that of cut stands. - After 5 years, local black walnut seedlings were taller than those of 12 out-of-state sources in a Maryland planting. Seedlings from south-of-local sources out grew trees from northern sources. - Three hundred softwood cuttings were collected from each of three mature sugar maple trees to test the effect of shoot size on adventitious root formation. One of the trees was a good rooter (61 percent rooted); one was a poor rooter (19 percent rooted); and the third was a non-rooter (1 percent rooted). There was an insufficient number of rooted cuttings from the third tree to permit meaningful comparisons. For the other two trees, long cuttings rooted better than short cuttings.
