- An attendance bonus paid by a wood processing firm was studied to determine its effectiveness in reducing absenteeism. Employees were divided into permanent and short-term groups, and their response to the bonus was studied, using non-parametric tests. The evidence suggested that the incentive favorably influenced the work attendance of only the permanent group. Recommendations are made for future research.AuthorsCharles H. WolfSourceRes. Pap. - The third timber inventory of Missouri's Eastern Ozarks Forest Survey Unit shows that there was a substantial gain in the volume of growing stock and smaller but sizable gain in the volume of sawtimber between 1959 and 1972; however, the area of commercial forest land declined slightly. - Shows Indiana saw log production by species and state of destination in 1971, and saw log receipts in Indiana by species, state of origin, and survey unit. Comparisons with similar data in 1966 are made and reasons for changes in production and receipts are given. Lumber market conditions and sawmill size and locations are discussed. - Mandatory permits provide recreation managers with better use estimates. Because some visitors do not obtain permits, use estimates based on permit data need to be corrected. In the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, a method was devised for distinguishing noncomplying groups and finding correction factors that reflect the impact of these groups. Suggestions for improving compliance are also discussed. Overall compliance was 88% of the sample. Groups without permits were primarily daytime motorboat users. - In red pine or aspen stands only two soil samples were needed to estimate (+/- 10%, 95% confidence) pH, bulk density, or sand, but 25 to 60 samples were required to estimate N, P, K, Ca, Mg, available water, or silt + clay.
