- Red pine was planted in 1962 using five ground preparation methods and two classes of planting stock. After 9 years, 3-0 trees planted by a Lowther machine with scalpers and by hand in single plowed furrows had 37 percent more survival than trees hand planted in scalps. Planting method did not afect survival 2-1 transplants. Height growth for both classes of stock ws 18 percent greater for the machine and single-furrow planted trees at 9 years than for trees hand planted in scalps. - Designing an efficient air flotation segregator to segregate bark chips from wood chips requires that the terminal velocities be determined for various pulpwood species. The technique described here uses forced air in a vertical wind tunnel with the chip initially at rest on a stationary screen; when the terminal air velocity in reached, the chip begins to float. A unique air velocity distribution in the center portion of the vertical tube and a higher velocity near the tube wall, thus preventing the chip from moving up on its edge against the wall. - Wind passage was measured over a black spruce canopy, at the surface under the canopy, and in a clearcut strip in a northern Minnesota bog. During a 40-day period wind below the canopy was 10 percent of that above the canopy while the wind in the clearcut strip was 45 percent of the total above the canopy. - Limited seed supply and inadequate mineral soil exposure were the principal reasons that a cutover jack pine stand on Grayling sand did not regenerate after prescribed burning. Two years after a similar stand was burned only 30 percent of the part that received no supplemental treatment had 4,000 seedlings per acre or more. Areas that were scarified with no supplemental seedling, and other areas that were seeded with no scarification, were both 70 percent stocked with 4,000 seedlings per acre; areas that were both scarified and seeded were 84 to 98 percent stocked at this rate. - In 1968 Wisconsin''s forests covered 14.9 million acres of land, a slight decline from the 15.2 million acres reported in 1956. - Ten years after planting, European larch and red pine diameters averaged 11.2 and 9.6 cm, and heights averaged 9.7 and 5.1 m. Litter on the larch plots was twice as heavy as on the pine and unplanted conrtol plots. Organic carbon content of the top 5 cm of soil appeared to reflect vegetation differences, but soil bulk density did not.
