This paper is based on a talk presented at the Symposium on Southern Appalachian Hardwoods, held at Asheuille, North Carolina, on 22 September 1970.

This study was done to determine the normal complement of individual carbohydrates present in roots of sugar maples duringthe year and to obtain, as a basis for future comparison, an estimate of the normal variation and range of concentrations of individual carbohydrates in the roots during the year.

In an exploratory study, we drove 32 wooden posts and 26 steel posts into a rock-filled base that was topped with limestone gravel and shale. We found that, though both post materials perform well, wood is superior to steel in resisting damage below the groundline.

Sixty-five species of trees and shrubs have been identified as native on the Bartlett Experimental Forest. These species are listed in this paper to provide a record of the woody vegetation of the area.

Knowledge of the seed-crop characteristics of paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) is essential to the success of carefully planned silvicultural measures aimed at the natural regeneration of this species. In general, we know how much seed is produced, when it is dispersed, and what its germination characteristics are. But more specific information about all three factors is needed to provide silviculturists with a sound basis for developing methods of regenerating paper birch that forest managers can apply successfully.

Diameter-limit cutting is widespread and is applied in a great many ways, often without appreciation of its advantages and disadvantages and withoutan understanding of its effects on subsequent stand development. Although the technique has advantages, unless applied carefully, it can have longlasting adverse effects on sawtimber production. The latest results of studies of diameter-limit cutting on the Fernow Experimental Forest, near Parsons, W. Va., shed additional light on its use as a silvicultural tool for sawtimber production.

As an aid to the marketing of oak strip flooring, a study was made of the distribution process for this product, from manufacture to consumer-where the flooring came from, where it went, how much was shipped, and who handled it.

A conflict is growing between landowners and snowmobilers. Many landowners think snowmobiles are a nuisance: noisy; trespassing on private land. Yet some landowners are cashing in on the new and fast-growing sport of snowmobiling by operating snowmobile enterprises. However, there are a few hard and cold facts that the landowner needs to consider before he invests his money in the snowmobile craze. The information presented here is based on case studies of eight commercial snowmobile enterprises in central New York State: on three golf courses, three farms, and two winter-sports areas.

In 1957, the USDA Forest Service Log Grade Committee recommended a service-wide action program in log- and tree-grade research. Approval of the program in 1958 resulted in the establishment of five species-oriented timber-quality research projects covering several groups of commercially important timber species. The eastern softwood timber-quality project was activated in 1960. Its initial objective was to develop improved log and tree grades for eastern white pine. This paper presents the results of this initial research.

Attempts to control oak wilt, ranging from relatively smallscale experiments to statewide programs, have been made in many States. Among the few currently active, those of Pennsylvania and West Virginia are notable for their size and duration. The pest-control organizations of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture have vigorously pursued well-organized statewide oak wilt control programs in their respective States for more than 15 years.
