- From an industry point-of-view, procurement of raw material and primary manufacture present problems today and challenges for tomorrow. So that you may become more familiar with the white birch industry and more specifically with Saunders Brothers, I will briefly explain some of the products we manufacture and some of the methods we use to make them. - This symposium on yellow and paper birch is the third in a series of meetings devoted to discussion of our fine hardwood timber species. The first meeting, held at Carbondale, Illinois, in 1966, dealt with black walnut. The second, held at Houghton, Michigan, in 1968, dealt with sugar maple. - Runoff was measured on four forested bog watersheds in northern Minnesota for 5 years. The experimental basins ranged in size from 24 to 130 acres and included both organic and mineral soils. Annual runoff was not evenly distributed. Spring runoff, from the beginning of flow in late March to the 1 st of June, accounted for 66 % of total annual water yield. Summer and fall runoff was normally very low and ceased on most of the bogs during each summer. - Important physical characteristics, such as water retention, water yield coefficient, and hydraulic conductivity, vary greatly for representative northern Minnesota peat materials. The differences are related to the degree of decomposition, which largely determines the porosity and pore size distribution. Fiber content (> 0.1 mm) and bulk density are properties often measured to indicate the degree of decomposition of peat materials and are criteria used to distinguish fibric, hemic, and sapic peat types.AuthorsD.H. - Furrow-seeding techniques seem to offer the best means of providing desired conditions at reasonable cost (Croker 1967). A tractor-drawn furrow-seeder prepares a mineral seedbed, sows and covers the seed, and can be maneuvered so as to leave some existing vegetation between furrows for shade. Since no commercial equipment was suitable for use under typical northeastern brushland conditions, we adapted existing equipment to suit our needs. - Growing hardwood trees for pulpwood offers an opportunity to overcome the objections which woodland owners have to managing their timber. Pulpwood growing is a relatively short-term venture requiring minimum investments of time, capital, and technical know-how. Also, hardwood pulpwood is likely to have reliable local market outlets in southeastern Ohio for years to come. From 1960 to 1965 pulpwood production in the area has increased about 5 percent per year (Kingsley and Dickson 1967). - At the Burlington, Vermont, research unit of the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, a study was begun in 1966 in an effort to identify the portions of the xylem that produce the most sap and the sap with the highest sugar content. The study revealed that the greatest volume of sap comes from xylem that is about 35 years old, and that the sweetest sap comes from the young xylem just beneath the bark.AuthorsCarter B. - A study was made in 1964 in northeastern New York State to determine if personal-int erview data differ significantly among five campgrounds and three summer months.
