Pines in the Pine Region of southern New Jersey differ greatly in their rates of growth. In a few areas unthinned stands have grown fast, producing 35-40 cords in 45 years. In such areas dominant pines 7 years old may be 12 feet tall, and early diameter growth be at the rate of 1 inch in 3 years. But in most areas the growth is slow. Pines 25 years old may be only 15 feet tall, and large pines may add only 1 inch to their diameters in 15 years. Volume growth is correspondingly slow.

Before scrub oak lands can be reforested, some cheap and effective way of preparing planting sites must be found. Chemical weed killers have been tried, but they proved to be impractical for general use (see Northeastern Research Note 6).

The Otsego Forest Products Cooperative Association is one of the most successful of the farmers' cooperatives that have attempted to deal with forest products. Now including about 1,000 members, it serves owners of woodlands in the rolling dairy country in and about Otsego County in central New York. The operations of the Otsego cooperative are centered at Cooperstown, which is located at the south end of Otsego Lake, the main source of the Susquehanna River. It is about 60 miles west of Albany.

This Survey Release presents the more significant preliminary statistics on the forest area and timber volume for each of the four regions of Central Kentucky. A similar report has been published for the Western Kentucky region and a release for the eastern region will be issued as soon as field work and tabulations are completed. Later an analytical report for the state will be published which will interpret forest area, timber- volume, growth, and drain statistics in the light of existing and anticipated economic conditions.

How should old-growth northern hardwoods be managed so as to create stands adapted to continuous yield under the selection system? Since these forests as they occur in the Lake States present an all-aged appearance, it has long been assumed that the single-tree selection could be used in their management.

A cooperative investigation carried on by the Connecticut State Park and Forest Commission and the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station in collaboration with the Northeastern Wood Utilization Council, Inc., the Fitchburg Engineering Company, the Connecticut Highway Department, and the Connecticut Board of Fisheries and Game. This bibliography lists the contributions to forest-research literature of the Federal forest experiment stations that have served the Northeast during the period 1923-49. At one time two such stations served the region: the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, established in 1923 at Amherst, Mass., later moved to New Haven, Conn., and the Allegheny Forest Experiment Station, established in 1927 at Philadelphia. Much of the forest land in New England, as elsewhere in the United States, is in small private holdings. How to get these small holdings under reasonably good forest management so that they can better contribute to the country?s need for a high sustained yield of good timber products is one of the forestry?s big problems.

Prescribed fires have been used experimentally in the oak-pine forests of southeastern New Jersey for 13 years. The authors' purpose in writing this report is to bring some of the results of these experiments up to date.
