- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program provides this resource update yearly as an overview of forest resources in Massachusetts. These estimates are derived from field data collected across a systematic network of fixed-radius forest monitoring plots located on both public and private land. New updates are provided annually as a subset of plots within the State are remeasured. Each year, field crews visit and measure a subset of all FIA plots across the entire State (the size of the subset varies by State and year). Combining...AuthorsForest Service. - The wood-boring cerambycid Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky), Asian longhorned beetle, is a highly destructive invasive pest that feeds on healthy hardwoods by tunneling under the bark and then within the sapwood as larvae mature. Larval weight gain and survival can be affected by the nutritional content, moisture content, and physical traits of the available food source. In this study, we experimentally manipulated the larval resource quality by controlling the moisture content of artificial diet (70% and 40% moisture) and by inserting larvae into cut wood of 2 different hosts (sugar...AuthorsSabrina Osowiecki, Melody KeenaKeywordsSourceEnvironmental EntomologyYear2025
- Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations fuel global warming, with boreal regions warming at a faster rate than many other areas. Boreal forests are an important component of the global carbon cycle, yet we have little data on photosynthetic responses of boreal trees to elevated CO2 (EC) and warming. We grew seedlings of 5 widespread North American boreal tree species (from Betula, Larix, Picea, and Pinus) under current (410 ppm) or elevated (750 ppm) CO2 and either ambient (+0 °C) or increased (+4 °C or +8 °C) temperature, then measured photosynthetic traits over a range of leaf temperatu...AuthorsJulia M Hammer, Mirindi Eric Dusenge, Nick Bither, Andrew Cook, André G Duarte, Kiana Lee, Bridget K Murphy, Melissa A. - White oak (Quercus alba L.) is an ecologically and economically important tree species, common in upland hardwood forests throughout the eastern United States (US). This study examines the population dynamics of this foundational species over the past 30 years, highlighting both range-wide and regional metrics of change. Using data from the USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis program, we analyzed changes in age and size distributions, as well as recruitment, mortality, and growth rates. We found a significant shift towards an older, mature-dominant population, with a notable...AuthorsLance A. Vickers, Benjamin O. Knapp, Thomas Goff, Thomas Brandeis, John M. - Ecological responses to climate change occur across vastly different time-scales, from minutes for physiological plasticity to decades or centuries for community turnover and evolutionary adaptation. Accurately predicting the range of ecosystem trajectories will require models that incorporate both fast processes that may keep pace with climate change and slower ones likely to lag behind and generate disequilibrium dynamics. However, the knowledge necessary for this integration is currently fragmented across disciplines. We develop ‘ecological acclimation’ as a unifying framework to...AuthorsMichael Stemkovski, Joey R.
