- This resource update contains the findings of a survey conducted on a sample of all primary wood-using mills in Massachusetts. It complements the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) annual inventory of volume and removals. The survey was conducted to determine the amount and source of wood receipts and annual timber product imports/exports. Only primary wood-using mills were surveyed. Primary mills are those that process roundwood in log or bolt form or as chipped roundwood. Examples of industrial roundwood products are saw logs, pulpwood, veneer logs, poles, and logs used for composite...AuthorsUSDA Forest Service.SourceResource Update FS-542. - In the national forest inventory of the USA, there is an ongoing issue with sample plots that are either completely or partially unmeasured due to access issues such as hazardous conditions or lack of permission. The nonrandom nature of the nonresponse in the general population potentially creates a bias in the sample and resulting estimations. A potential mitigation option is the use of response homogeneity groups in combination with ratio-to-size estimators. This paper presents an extension of this approach where per-unit area estimates commonly useful to practitioners, e.g. number of...AuthorsJim Westfall, Paul L. - We used national forest inventory data from Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, U.S.A. to produce estimates of the annual areal extent of wind disturbance for 2005–2018. Our results indicate that at least for wind in the region, including the panel of plots assigned to the inventory year coincident with the disturbance year produces estimates that are lower than estimates computed with that specific inventory year excluded. We attributed this result to partial observation of disturbance for that year, a situation that arises from the operational necessity of a year or more being required...AuthorsChristopher B. - General understanding of disease epiphytotics caused by introduced agents (pathogens) in forest systems, as well as the ability to assess risk of future introductions within a process-barrier framework of biological invasion, are impeded by a lack of systematically compiled information on origins and functional traits of pathogens that have become established outside their range. To address these gaps, substantially update previous registries, and provide critical biosecurity information, we assembled a list of established forest phytopathogens that are present, but not thought to be...AuthorsGeoffrey M. - The use of nested plot sizes in forest inventories that encounter a wide range of conditions is relatively common. In straightforward situations, data from the different nested plot sizes are usually combined to create a single plot observation for estimation purposes. However, circumstances may occur where nested plot size estimates are obtained separately and subsequently combined via addition to obtain the final result. In these cases, covariances among the nested plots must be considered in the calculation of estimator variance. However, there are several potential approaches that...AuthorsJim WestfallSourceCanadian Journal of Forest ResearchYear2025
