Description

Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is a disease-causing fungus that is devastating amphibian populations worldwide. This Web-based mapping project facilitates communication between scientists and natural resource managers as they try to learn more about the fungus and assess risk to local amphibian populations.

Purpose and Scope

To address the global spread of Bd it is crucial that a dedicated system is available to collect, map, and model the prevalence of infection to aid control measures directed against Bd. We have developed Bd-Maps for different audiences (scientists, policy makers, the public) and we are focused on addressing a number of questions (spread, epidemiology, evolution, control). The overarching aim of Bd-Maps is to provide a community-focused resource. All data are presented in a geographical context facilitating identification of areas of potential spread. Temporal analysis allows previous spread to be modelled and used to identify areas of concern. Such analyses will be directed towards policy makers, resource managers, the general public, and the scientific community. All the data on the public site will be downloadable, allowing further analysis and synthesis by interested parties.
