Where in the World is the Pacific Marten?

Tracking the rare animal in Oregon's coastal forest 

The Pacific marten (Martes caurina) is a small mammal native to forested areas along the coast of the Pacific Northwest. These elusive, rare carnivores were thought to be extinct for over 50 years until some were spotted in northern California in 1996. Researcher Katie Moriarty of the Pacific Northwest Research Station and her colleagues worked to find out how many Pacific marten are currently left in the wild and their habitat needs to provide wildlife managers with accurate information that is critical to the future of the species.
