Bluejay

Bluejay Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent a pristine example of forest on soils derived from aerially deposited Mt.  Mazama popcorn pumice. The terrain of the RNA is primarily gentle slopes with shallow draws . Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) are the dominant tree species while bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) and needlegrass (Achnatherumspp.) are the primary understory species.  The RNA was expanded by 200 acres in 1997 to include Cusick’s bluegrass (Poa cusickii) meadow, lodgepole pine/bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), and bluegrass (Poa secunda) scabland plant communities.
