Cannon Well

Cannon Well Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent the lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) / bitterbrush (Purshia)/ western needlegrass (Achnatherum occidentale) association found in the East Cascades of Oregon. The topography of the RNA includes gently rolling hills with east to northeast exposures. Small flat areas and depressions lie within the northeast portion of the RNA while the greatest elevation lies on minor ridges in the southwest corner of the RNA. Pumice depositions cover the RNA. The lodgepole pine/bitterbrush/western needlegrass association occupies more than 75% of the natural area. Scattered stands of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) are common at higher elevations. Small portions of the RNA also contain Lodgepole pine/needlegrass and pumice desert communities.
