Cougar Butte

Cougar Butte Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent mountain-meadow forest mosaic in the southern portion of the Oregon Cascades. Two small lakes and several wet bogs lie within the RNA. White fir (Abies grandis) is scattered throughout the RNA while Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is commonly found on the south slopes and Shasta red fir (Abies magnifica var. shastensis), mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana), and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) are found on the north and east slopes. Incense-cedar (Calocedrus decurrens) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) are slowly invading the meadows.
