Maitlen Creek

Maitlen Creek Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent forests comprised of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and western larch (Larix occidentalis).  The RNA’s exposure ranges from southwest to southeast and the topography is steep and rugged. Maitlen Creek forms the west boundary of the RNA. Two small tributary streams run through the RNA.  Douglas fir and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) are the predominant tree species of the RNA. Western larch is also present. Douglas fir/ninebark (Physocarpus), Douglas fir/pinegrass (Calamagrostis rubescens), grand fir (Abies grandis)/queen's cup (Clintoniauniflora), subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa)/twinflower (Linnaea), western hemlock/queen's cup, and western redcedar (Thujaplicata)/queen's cup are the major plant communities.
