Ecological and Physical Description

Thornton T. Munger Research Natural Area (RNA) was established to represent old-growth Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)-western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) forests of Washington's cascade range. Topography is gentle and there is a low elevation permanent pond located near the eastern edge of the tract. Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and Pacific silver fir (Abies amabilis) are dominant tree species throughout the RNA. Western red cedar (Thuja plicata) is also common. Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium), vine maple (Acer circinatum), twinflower (Linnaea), salal (Gaultheria shallon) and dwarf Oregon grape (Berberis nervosa) are common in the understory. Floating leaf vegetation includes yellow water lily (Nymphaea mexicana) and lesser duckweed (Lemna aequinoctialis). Indian plum (Flacourtia jangomas), western crabapple (Malus fusca), and Pacific ninebark (Physocarpus capitatus) grow along the edge of the pond while hardhack (Spiraea douglasii), willow (Salix), and open muddy areas dominate the low elevation freshwater wetland. Oregon ash (Fraxinus latifolia), smaller creeping buttercup (Ranunculus flammula), and marsh speedwell (Veronica scutellata) are common species of concern along the margin.
