- We examined the mathematical demography of northern spotted owls (Strix occidentalis caurina) using simple deterministic population models. Our goals were to gain insights into the life history strategy, to determine demographic attributes most affecting changes in population size, and to provide guidelines for effective management of spotted owl populations. The spotted owl apparently has evolved high adult survival rates associated with irregular and unpredictable reproduction. The finite rate of population change (l) in this subspecies is most sensitive to variation in adult survival...AuthorsB.R. Noon, C.M. BilesSourceJournal of Wildlife Management. 54: 18-27Year1990
- Research was conducted to determine the food habits of Hawaiian Crow (Corvus hawaiiensis) nestlings, variety of food items ingested relative to their age, and the nutritional composition of ingested fruits. Knowledge of the fruits’ nutritive value and the nestlings’ diet allowed us to determine what plants best meet nutritional needs of adult and nestling crows for restocking purposes. Our evaluation of fecal droppings suggested that nestlings were fed a variety of items similar to those ingested by adults. The types and proportions of food materials found in droppings changed with age....AuthorsH.F. Sakai, J.R. CarpenterKeywordsSourceCondor. 92: 220-228Year1990

- Sandalwood (Santalum spp.) trees grow in a variety of climates around the world and are culturally and economically important to about 15 countries. Exploitation of the fragrant heartwood for carvings, oil, and incense in the past has led to the need to conserve and manage the genus. The first substantial logging of sandalwood in Hawaii in 150 years generated local controversy in 1988, uncovered misinformation and speculation about the genus, and eventually led to the symposium in 1990. Papers in this proceedings cover history, distribution, status, ecology, management, propagation, and...AuthorsLawrence Hamilton, C. Eugene ConradKeywordsSourceGen. Tech. Rep. PSW-GTR-122.
