- Since 1965, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife and Canadian Wildlife Services have sponsored annual Brceding Bird Surveys (BBSs), which are done in the United States and Canada using standard procedures. Data resulting from individual surveys may have Cptential to answer certain management questions or serve to fill information gaps for relatively small geographic areas. A BBS route was begun near Downieville, California, in 1975, giving 13 years of continuous information on birds. - A computer program to simulate spatial distribution of hardwood rootstock populations is presented. Nineteen 3 to 6 yearold loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations in Alabama and Georgia were measured to provide information for the simulator. Spatial pattern, expressed as Pielou's nonrandomness index (PNI), ranged from 0.47 to 2.45. Scatterplots illustrated no relationship between pattern, species relative density, site preparation, or stand age. Newnham's point pattern generator was modified to reduce execution time. - The computer program described provides a Douglas-fir seed orchard manager (user) with a quantitative method for making insect pest management decisions on a desk-top computer. The decision system uses site-specific information such as estimates of seed crop size, insect attack rates, insecticide efficacy and application costs, weather, and crop value. - The topographic grain of a landscape is strongly influenced by the drainage density, and the drainage density reflects the balance between processes active on hillslopes and those in channels. - Deforestation, pollution, and climatic change threaten forest diversity all over the world. And because forests are the habitats for diverse organisms, the threat is extended to all the flora and fauna associated with forests, not only forest trees. - DEBRIS is a menu-driven, interactive computer program written in FORTRAN 77 for recording and platting survey data and for computing hydraulic variables and depths of scour and fill.
