- Until 1972, the U.S. Forest Service's Individual Fire Reports recorded locations by the section-township-range system..These earlier fire reports, therefore, lacked congruent locations. RAMP (Regional Area Mapping Procedure) was designed to make the reports more useful for quantitative analysis. This computer-based technique converts locations expressed in section-township-range notations into latitude-longitude coordinates. Two subsystems make up RAMP. - The pales weevil, Hylobius pales (Herbst), attacks all pine species in Eastern North America and is considered the most destructive pest of pine reproduction in the Eastern United States (Speers and Rauchenberger 1971). - The contact toxicity of 100 insecticides to last stage larvae of Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman was tested by topical application in a 10-yr series of screening experiments. Pyrethroids were generally the most toxic group of chemicals tested. - Tests used data gathered by the first Earth Resources Technology Satellite. Results on sites in Georgia, Colorado, and South Dakota indicated that ERTS enlargements, preferably color, would be useful to forest managers of large ownerships for broad area planning.
