- Infiltration continues to occupy the attention of soil physicists and engineers. A theoretical and experimental analysis of the effect of surface sealing on infiltration by Edwards and Larson [1969] showed that raindrops reduced the infiltration rate by as much as 50% for a two-hour period of infiltration. The effect of raindrops on the surface infiltration rate of soils has been investigated by Seginer and Morin [1970] who used an infiltration model based on the Horton equation.AuthorsL. L. - Standing crops of juvenile coho (silver) salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), steelhead rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), and coast cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki) were examined in seven coastal streams to define the natural carrying capacity of these streams, and to develop methods of population comparison and prediction which could be used to determine the effects of road construction and logging on salmon and trout production.AuthorsJames W. - The movement of 14-C from the old needles to the roots, and later to the new needles, was measured in 2-year-old ponderosa pine seedlings. The seedlings were in one of three growth stages at the time of the feeding of 14-CO-2: 9 days before spring bud break with no root activity; 7 days before spring bud break with high root activity; and 7 days after spring bud break with moderate root activity. - In a group of studies at Swain Mountain Experimental Forest in northeastern California, seedling survival and mortality were analyzed within the general framework of seed production and dispersal, germination, seedbed condition, soil surface temperature, insolation, soil moisture, and vegetative competition. Factors found to favor seedling establishment were abundance of sound seed, mineral soil seedbed, and probably some shade in the first year. - Three methods of applying borax were tested for penetration into stump tissues and for effectiveness in controlling Fomes annosus infection of freshly cut white fir stumps. All borax treatments reduced infection significantly; dry powder was the most effective. - During pyrolysis of pure cellulose, the Crystallinity Index (Crl) remained fairly constant over more than 50% weight loss before dropping rapidly as the X-ray pattern deteriorated. With samples first treated with trace quantities of inorganic salts, heating first increased the Crl—the results implying a preferentially catalyzed decomposition of the amorphous regions. Swelling cellulose in liquid ammonia eliminated the crystalline diffraction pattern, but heating restored a considerable degree of order. - California forest tree seed zones were established originally by Fowells (1946), with revisions proposed by Roy (1963) and Schubert (1966). The Forest Tree Seed Committee of the Northern California Section, Society of American Foresters, has revised the original zones and updated the recording system described in the earlier reports. - In part to supplement meager data on lumber grade yield of Hawaii-grown timber, 30 robusta eucalyptus logs were shipped to a Michigan sawmill for processing. The logs were from 12 trees in three different stands. The lumber produced was graded according to National Hardwood Lumber Association standards. The sample was too small to provide a basis for predicting grade yields, but robusta yields, by log grade, compared favorably with yields of common hardwoods on the United States mainland.AuthorsRoger G. - After initial clearing, parts of a fuelbreak on the Stanislaus Nationd Forest, central California, were planted to perennial grasses; other parts were not. After 5 years, a comparison between adjacent seeded sand unseeded strips shows that the perernnials had reduced the number of woody plant seedlings by a factor of 8, height of seedlings by 50 percent, and amount of mnud plant gound cover by 33 percent.
