- A sample of California Division of Forestry employees whose jobs include some contact with the public were queried about job satisfaction and employee motivations, and their responses were related to the Division's fire prevention program. Most respondents felt that Division management considered the program less important than fire suppression and detection. They favored enlarging the program and giving it a higher priority. - Thorough evaluation of insect impact on forest stands is difficult and expensive on the ground. In a study of tree damage following Douglas-fir tussock moth defoliation in Modoc County, California, large-scale (1:1,584)70-mm. color aerial photography was an effective sampling tool and took lesstime and expense than ground methods. Comparison of the photo interpretations with a sample ground cruisegave high correlations (0.78 to 0.095) for tree mortality top kill, and an estimate of mortality made from photoswas within 5 cut of the ground cruise estimate.AuthorsSteven L. - Changes in the size composition of spawning bed materials in six coastal streams were monitored for 3 years to determine the effects of logging on the habitat of silver salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and trout (Salmo gairdnerii gairdnerii and S. clarkii clarkii). Four test streams were sampled before, during and after logging. Two streams in unlogged watersheds and the undisturbed upstream section of one test stream served as controls. - The allometric relationship, log (y) = a + k•log (x)-where x is one plant organ (e g., dry weight of roots) and y is another (e.g., dry weight of shoot)-was used to study the relative distribution of growth within loblolly pine seedlings. The relative distribution of growth between shoot and roots or among needles, stem, and roots was unchanged by conditions ranging from full sunlight to one-third of full sunlight. - The Caspar Creek Watershed Study was initiated in 1960 to study large differences between conditions of stream flow and sedimentation, fish life and fish habitat between paired watersheds, one of which will be carefully logged while the other is left undisturbed as a control. - Nonproducing acres and unproductive years are both costly to timberland owners. These costs are reduced by restoring timber stocking with minimum delay. The proper prescription for regeneration can insure fast restocking. - Water extracts of ponderosa pine, sugar pine, white fir, and coast redwood litter stimulated the germination of macroconidia and chlamydospores of Fusarium oxysporum. Germination of chlamydospores of F. oxysporum, F. oxysperum f. sp. vasinfectum, F. solani, and F. soiani f. sp. phaseoli was also enhanced in conifer soils, and reached 95 to 98%. When ponderosa litter extract was compared with 1% glucose and 2.5% asparagine solutions on chlamydospores of F. oxysporum in soil, greater germination was obtained with the litter extract.
