- A field technique for evaluating winds aloft is described. It can be used at remote places--even at the site of a wildfire. It has proved accurate as any known single theodolite technique, and is time-saving because the winds aloft are evaluated in miles per hour from direct readout. - In a test of simulated vertical house siding, robusta eucalyptus and Australian toon panels appear to hold paint as adequately as redwood and Douglas-fir panels after 1-year exposure. The addition of anti-mildew agents to paints seems advisable-particularly in higher rainfall areas. - Two studies started in 1964 tested control of dense understory vegetation in Hawaii rain forests with herbicides applied by a large turbine blower spraying from widely spaced bulldozer lines. - In clearcutting 90-year-old stands at the Challenge Experimental Forest, all merchantable trees greater than 12 inches d.b.h. were removed. Felling costs averaged $3.86 and required 0.55 man-hours per M bd. ft. in cut volumes averaging 19,700 bd. ft. per acre. Yarding, at a rate of 0.54 hours per M bd. ft., cost $4.42.AuthorsWilliam A. - A new technique for sampling tops of tall Douglas-fir trees by using a special pole pruner from a helicopter has been developed and field-tested. Thee pole pruner cuts and holds a branchlet. Foliage samples collected will be compared by spectral analysis to show the type of aerial imagery that best differentiates healthy trees from those attacked by root rot.AuthorsJohn F. - A sampling study was made of the number of bitterbrush seeds per trap from plots in northeastern California. The count per trap had a large variation for each plant. This variation was not reduced to an acceptable low level by grouping the seed traps according to their position relative to the plant crown. - A new system developed for locating pairs of comparable areas consists of three steps: (a) characterizing each of two areas according to 18 site factors and soil properties, (b) rating each pair of characteristics for comparability, and (c) rating the two areas for comparability by using the individual ratings as the basis. Two areas scoring 85 or more points out of a possible 100 are considered sufficiently comparable in characteristics not easily affected by treatment to justify establishing study plots on them.AuthorsRaymond D. - After 8 fire burned the San Dimas Experimental Forest, near Glendora Calif., in 1960, about 350 acres of brushland were converted to grass. Six years later, the frequency and extent of soil slips - a form of gravitational mass movement - on this acreage was compared with those on comparable sites where brush cover was recovering naturally after the fire. - Under conditions simulating fireline operations, 117 helicopter flights were made at night over mountain areas in southern California. The trials indicated that such flights, carrying passengers and cargo, can be made safely if (a) the night operation is well planned, (b) the helicopter is in excellent condition, (c) adequate lighting and guidance equipment are provided and used; and d) the pilot and crew are well trained.AuthorsRalph G.
