- Abstract - Only in a bulldozed brush field and with heavy applications of hexadecanol under snow did significant reductions in evapotranspiration occur with application of hexadecanol to natural stands. Marked reductions in evaporation from snow occurred when hexadecanol emulsion was applied to the snow surface. More than two-thirds of the precipitation in the United States is used by forest, browse, and non-economic vegetation areas (Wolman 1963). - Mass fires are likely to follow a nuclear attack. - The specific gravity of the wood of 14 conifers grown in Hawaii was measured by means of increment cores. Most species were growing in environments quite different from their native habitats. The specific gravity and growth characteristics under several site conditions were compared. Described in some detail are Norfolk-Island-pine, slash pine, Jeffrey pine, jelecote pine, cluster pine, Monterey pine, and loblolly pine. - A cost accounting analysis of full-scale logging operations in old-growth redwood during 2 years revealed that it cost $12.24 per M bd. ft. (gross Scribner log scale) to get logs on trucks. Road development costs averaged another $5.19 per M bd. ft. Felling-bucking production was calculated by average tree d.b.h. Both skidding and loading outputs per hour were determined by average log volume for a landing area and for a short time period.
