- This chapter addresses Indigenous Fire Stewardship and cultural burning using several case studies applicable to wildland fire management in the Wildland-Urban Interface. Indigenous fire stewardship practices had the highest influence around settlements (e.g. permanent villages, seasonal camps) and travel corridors (i.e. trails and roads) that linked with more intensively managed habitats containing food, material-fiber/basketry, wildlife/prey, and other desired resources. - One of the principal questions in hydrology is how and when water leaves the critical zone storage as either stream flow or evapotranspiration. - Soil compaction during post-fire logging can increase runoff and erosion. Increasing surface cover is an effective way to reduce erosion, but this has not been tested on soils impacted by both fire and compaction. - To better understand forest carbon (C) storage patterns, C budgets were constructed and contrasted among four stands of different vegetation, elevation, and disturbance histories from the northern Sierra Nevada of California, USA. - The 1351 ha Walker Fire burned in late August 2015 on the eastern Sierra Nevada, California escarpment from sagebrush steppe and pinyon pine woodlands (2150 m) through mid-elevation forests into subalpine whitebark pine (WBP; 3310 m).
