The plants and fungi that provide non-wood forest products are essential parts of a healthy forest. These species also contribute to the sustenance and livelihood of people around the world. In 2013, people gathered more than a half million pounds of food from public forests across the U.S.

Some classic and prominent non-wood forest products of southern forests include Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), and the pawpaw tree (Asimina triloba). The Southern Research Station provides knowledge and global leadership on the management, production, and valuation of these important species.
