- Periodic annual board-foot growth was related to age, site index, total basal area per acre, and some of their interactions in thinned loblolly pine stands in Georgia, Virginia, and South Carolina. Values presented in this paper provide stocking standards for loblolly pine grown in uniformly spaced, insect- and disease-free stands. Growth prediction values must be scaled down for extensive holdings because of heterogeneity of stocking, clustering, voids, and nonproducing areas.AuthorsThomas C. Nelson, K. B. Trousdell, E. - Four expressions of stand density were tested in cubic-foot growth multiple regressions in even-aged, managed stands. Stahelin's percent of full stocking, total basal area, Reine.ke's stand density index, and initial merchantable cubic-foot volume were tested as expressions of density, in combination with age and site in regression analyses of cubic-foot growth. Essentially, the same amount of variation in annual cubic-foot growth was explained by each expression in combination with age, site, and certain of their significant interactions from data involving repeat measurements of stands...AuthorsThomas C. - In a greenhouse experiment conducted to determine the relationship of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium supply to slash pine seedling yield and composition, 30 combinations of N, P, and K were supplied to the seedlings for a four-month growing period. Seedling yield and compositionwere found to be closely associated with nutrient supply. Fresh weight, dry weight, and height growth were indicated by regression analyses to be maximum when the nutrient supply of N and K is greater than 125 ppm, but less than 625 ppm. Maximum response to phosphorus was not reached at 125ppm, the highest...AuthorsCharles E. McGeeSourceForest ScienceYear1963
- This study was established to investigate the effect of deep-planting on survival and growth of small slash pine seedlings. It is located on furrowed old fields in the Savannah River Project near Aiken, S.C. Seedlings were graded on size and root development, and planted at three depths: to the bud, halfway between root collar and bud, and at standard nursery depth. Each treatment was replicated three times on three surface soil types, sand, sandy loam, and loamy sand. In all cases deep-planting improved fifth-year survival, planting to the bud was best, and planting halfway between root...AuthorsCharles McGee, John B. HatcherSourceJournal of ForestryYear1963
