- Green building has become increasingly important. Therefore, consumers and builders often take into account the environmental attributes of a building material. This study determined the environmental attributes associated with manufacturing 38-mm × 138-mm (nominal 2 × 6) redwood decking in northern California using the life-cycle inventory method. Primary data collected from four redwood mills represented over 83% of redwood lumber production. The primary data were then weight-averaged on a per-unit basis of one m3 of planed redwood decking (380 oven dry (OD) kg/m3) to calculate material...AuthorsRichard Bergman, Han-Sup Han, Elaine Oneil, Ivan L. - This testing program was designed to benchmark the performance of traditional roof systems and incrementally improved roof-to-wall systems with the goal of developing connection solutions that are optimized for performance and constructability. Nine full-size roof systems were constructed and tested with various levels and types of heel detailing to measure the lateral performance of the roof-to- wall interface. Our test results indicate that the oriented strandboard (OSB) sheathed high-heel truss detail yields performance comparable to that of the unblocked, low-heel truss configuration...AuthorsAndrew DeRenzis, Vladimir Kochkin, Xiping WangKeywordsSourceUSDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, General Technical Report, FPL-GTR-214, 2012: 27 p.Year2012
- Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a prefabricated solid engineered wood product made of at least three orthogonally bonded layers of solid-sawn lumber or structural composite lumber that are laminated by gluing of longitudinal and transverse layers with structural adhesives to form a solid rectangular-shaped, straight, and plane timber intended for roof, floor, or wall applications. While this engineered wood product has been used in Europe for over 15 years, the production of CLT and design of CLT structural systems have just begun in North America. For the acceptance of new construction...AuthorsBorjen Yeh, Sylvain Gagnon, Tom Williamson, Ciprian Pirvu, Conroy Lum, David E. - Covered bridges are part of the fabric of American history. Although much effort is expended to preserve these structures, many are lost forever. The National Park Service’s Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) has efforts under way to document historic structures. Their Level I documentation is defined in the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Architectural and Engineering Documentation and consists of measured and interpretive drawings, large-format photographs, and written historical reports. To assist in this effort, newer technologies need to be explored...AuthorsRobert J. Ross, Brian K. Brashaw, Samuel J. - This study reports the production of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) from a bleached eucalyptus pulp using a commercial stone grinder. Scanning electronic microscopy and transmission electronic microscopy imaging were used to reveal morphological development of CNF at micro and nano scales, respectively. Two major structures were identified (1) highly kinked, naturally helical, and untwisted fibrils that serve as backbones of CNF networks, and (2) entangled, less distinctively kinked (or curled) and twisted “soft looking” nanofibrils. These two major structures appeared in different features...AuthorsQ.Q. Wang, Junyong Zhu, Roland L. Gleisner, Thomas Kuster, U. Baxa, S.E. McNeilKeywordsSourceCellulose (2012) 19:1631-1643.Year2012
- This report updates and revises information from the 1976 Forest Service publication by Rodney C. DeGroot, “Your Wood Can Last for Centuries.” It explains why wood decays, alerts the homeowner to conditions that can result in decay in buildings, and describes measures to prevent moisture-related damage to wood.AuthorsCarol A. - Raman spectroscopy was used to analyze cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)–polypropylene (PP) composites and to investigate the spatial distribution of CNCs in extruded composite filaments. Three composites were made from two forms of nanocellulose (CNCs from wood pulp and the nanoscale fraction of microcrystalline cellulose) and two of the three composites investigated used maleated PP as a coupling agent. Raman maps, based on cellulose and PP bands at 1098 and 1460 cm-1, respectively, obtained at 1 lm spatial resolution showed that the CNCs were aggregated to various degrees in the PP matrix. - The effectiveness of treatments of the surface layer of novel foam core particleboards were evaluated by means of Cone calorimeter tests. Foam core particleboards with variations of surface layer treatment, adhesives and surface layer thicknesses under similar processing conditions were used to produce the test specimen for the Cone calorimeter tests. Ignitability, heat release rate profile, peak of heat release rate, total heat released, effective heat of combustion, mass loss rate, gaseous emissions and specific extinction area were measured using the cone irradiance of 50 kW/m2.Additiona...AuthorsMark A. - The goals of this study were to investigate the effect of environment temperature on acoustic velocity of standing trees and green logs and to develop workable models for compensating temperature differences as acoustic measurements are performed in different climates and seasons. The objective of Part 1 was to investigate interactive effects of temperature and moisture state of wood on acoustic properties in a laboratory-controlled environment. Small clear specimens (25.4 x 25.4 x 407 mm) obtained from a freshly cut red pine (Pinus resinosa) log were conditioned to four moisture content...AuthorsXiping Wang, Lihai Wang, Shan Gao, R. - Nine wood species are being evaluated in above ground field studies in Mississippi and Wisconsin. Candidate naturally durable wood (NDW) species are being rated at yearly intervals for resistance to decay, cupping, and checking. Field ratings after 12 months exposure are presented. To date, Paulownia tomentosa (PAW) and southern yellow pine (SYP) are least durable and cedars are the most durable in above ground exposure. Wood samples are being taken from the deck-boards and subjected to chemical analysis using GC-MS. Fatty acids from NDW species were extracted, derivatized, and analyzed...AuthorsGrant T.
