- The nature and scope of law-enforcement problems in the National Park System are of increasing concern to park and recreation area managers. A positive response by management in terms of formulating and executing a fully professional and effective enforcement program is vital for sustaining public confidence that Parks are safe for individual and family use. - A 3-year study indicates that nuisance behaviors, law violations, vandalism, and littering in forest campgrounds are more extensive than is generally believed. All campers share responsibility for the problems. Violations occur because of ignorance of, lack of understanding, or a willingness to disregard rules. Control measures are discussed, including an incentive system utilizing monetary and nonmonetary rewards, which was used successfully to control littering in a large forest campground.AuthorsRoger N. - The viability of seeds o[ northern conifers apparently does not persist in the forest floor for more than one year. A set of forest-floor samples collected two years alter a heavy seed crop and one year alter a seedcrop failure did not produce any conifer germinants, regardless of whether or not the surfaces of the samples were disturbed. A second set of forest-floor samples collected the spring alter a good conifer seed crop yielded many conifer germinants. - Most of the sugarbushes being tapped today developed from natural forest stands years before their present owners were born. Trees were plentiful then, and land could be purchased at low cost. Wood was the primary fuel for both homes and sugaring operations, and unwanted trees in the sugarbush were removed as part of the annual wood-cutting process. - The chemical constituents of honey locust, Gleditsia triacanthos L., leaves were investigated as feeding stimulants for larvae of Homodaula anisocentra Meyrick. A water-soluble fraction evoked a significant feeding response. Several sugars and amino acids were present in this extract, but only sucrose and fructose stimulated feeding significantly; several amino acids stimulated feed-ing to a lesser degree. - Pokeweed, a plant abundant in Appalachia, exhibits some chemical similarities to a related species that has shown molluscicidal properties. Because this suggests that pokeweed, Phytolacca americana L.
