- Until now, information about the characteristics of sawlogs delivered to Appalachian sawmills has been generally unavailable. We know what the standing timber is like, from forest-survey data. But this paper covers a different spectrum: the frequency distributions-by size, grade, volume, and species group-of factory-grade logs actually harvested and delivered to the mills. - This book of tables was prepared to help the logging operator estimate how much a particular logging job will wear the tires on his rubber-wheeled skidders. - The artificial defoliation of sugar maple (Acer. saccharum Marsh.) can cause a marked decline in root food reserves, especially starch, and an increase in the levels of the reducing sugars, fructose and glucose. Defoliation can also bring on the dieback-decline syndrome in sugar maples (Parker and Houston 1968). Two experiments designed to examine this question were conducted in 1968-69. In one, the effects of both drought and defoliation were examined; in the second, defoliation was eliminated as a variable. - How much production a logger gets from a logging job may depend heavily on his skidder operators. They are key men on any logging job. This is one conclusion that forestry engineers at the USDA Forest Service's Forestry Sciences Laboratory at Morgantown, West Virginia, came to after studying the operation of u-heeled skidders in mountainous Appalachian terrain. - Sugarbush managers have long needed a guide for determining the stocking of their sugar maple stands. The question is: for desirable sugar maple sap production, how many trees per acre are needed? To provide information about stocking, the USDA Forest Service's sugar maple sap production project at Burlington, Vermont, has made a regionwide study of the relationships between crown diameter and d.b.h. - Sawmill production managers often find it hard to tell what sawing pattern will yield the most. If sample logs are sawed in one sawing pattern, they cannot be reassembled and sawed again in a different pattern. And if a new sample of logs is used for each new sawing pattern, it is hard to tell if differences in yield are due to the sawing patterns or are due to natural differences between the logs in the samples. - The even-aged hardwood forest, with a poorly balanced distribution of age-classes, can cause perplexing problems during the first rotation. What is the best cutting strategy to follow? By using linear programming, we developed some cutting strategies that maximize board-foot production and produce a balanced age distribution by the end of the first rotation.
