Under the authority of the McSweeney-McNary Forest Research Act of May 22, 1928, and subsequent amendments, the Forest Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture, conducts a series of continuing forest surveys of all states to provide up-to-date information about the forest resources of the Nation. This is a guide to silviculture only; it must not be confused with a management plan, for which it is no substitute. In this guide we attempt to specify only the method of treatment that should lead to the most efficient production of timber within the relatively small area of timber stand. We do not consider here other land uses nor important questions of timber management such as regulation of area or allowable cut, except where these factors influence silvicultural decisions.
