- This twenty-second annual report shows the Lake States pulpwood harvest decreased to about 4 million cords from a record high of 4 1/2 million cords in 1966. Pulpwood receipts remained high in Wisconsin but decreased in Michigan and Minnesota. Minnesota shipped 106,000 cords more to Wisconsin than in 1966. - Sixty-tree percent of the area in Missouri's National Forests produces forage at the rate of about 50 pounds per acre per year. - A 20-year study in Wisconsin swamp stand of northern white-cedar indicates that after a second thinning gross basal area growth is independent of stand densities ranging from 90 to 225 square feet of basal area per acre. - Pulpwood production in the Northeast continued to climb in 1966 for the fourth consecutive year. Total production of all forms of pulpwood (table 1)-roundwood, pulpwood chips, and miscellaneous wood-industry byproducts-amounted to 5,737,700 cords in the 14 Northeastern States. This total represents a gain of 604,900 cords or 12 percent over the 1965 total of 5,122,800 cords. - The elytral stridulitra and the plectra on the sixth abdominal tergite are described and illustrated for both sexes of Conotrachelus naso LeConte, C. posticatus Boheman, and C. carinifer Casey, as is the stridulitrum of the male C. nenuphar (Herbst); the female of C. nenuphar has no plecctrum. The stridulations are described and illustrated by audiospectrographs for the first 3 species. Demonstrable differences exist between the stridulations of these species, and between the sexes of each. Individual weevils are capable of several speeds and frequencies of stridulations. - A life history study was made of the ash seed weevils, Thysanocnemis bischoffi Blatchley and T. helvola LeConte. Over-wintering occurs as larvae in ash seeds or in soil, with adults appearing in July and August. Adults soon deposit eggs within ash seeds, where larval development occurs.
