- Maximum early gains in the genetic improvement of eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr.) in the lower Mississippi Valley are most likely to be achieved through identification and commercial vegetative propagation of superior genotypes. A relatively simple improvement program having this goal might include evaluation of progeny from phenotypically superior mother-trees followed by clonal tests of outstanding juvenile phenotypes selected from progeny. - The reproductive systems of forest trees that have evolved in wild habitats are usually characterized by delayed flowering age, cyclic seed years, and possibly an optimum, rather than a maximum, number of seeds per tree. - Lake States pulpwood production in 1965 was 3,636,000 cords, a minor increase of 8,000 cords from 1964 and only 26,000 cords less than the record production of 1963. - Scleroderris canker, a disease caused by the fungus Scleroderris lagerbergii Gremmen, has a long history of injuries to young pine plantations and nurseries in Europe. It was recently identified as the cause of serious damage in the Lake States.
