- Lake States pulpwood production in 1965 was 3,636,000 cords, a minor increase of 8,000 cords from 1964 and only 26,000 cords less than the record production of 1963. This paper shows pulpwood production for 1965 by county and species for each of the Lake States and compares production by species and Forest Survey District for several previous years. Also presented are data on 1965 pulpwood production and receipts by state for Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri.AuthorsJames E. BlythKeywordsSourceResource Bulletin NC-2. - Gives brief reports on 133 forest tree improvement research projects conducted by 12 agencies and 8 developmental tree improvement projects being conducted by 4 agencies in Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Reports the object, species studied, methods, accomplishments, cooperators, and assignment for each project. Includes indexes by genera and subject matter categories, research workers, and cooperators.AuthorsPaul O. RudolfKeywordsSourceResearch Paper NC-1. - This paper describes how to estimate present values of incomes and costs in growing red pine trees for sale as cordwood or sawtimber, and how to calculate expectation values and rates of return for a wide range of timber-growing conditions, using the tables of expectation value indexes and interest rate multipliers provided. It illustrates how to compare investment opportunities in growing red pine, how to determine the amount one can afford to invest to buy land, establish and maintain a stand, or pay in annual taxes or other expenses, and how to estimate the cost of producing stumpage...AuthorsAllen L. - Scleroderris canker, a disease caused by the fungus Scleroderris lagerbergii Gremmen, has a long history of injuries to young pine plantations and nurseries in Europe. It was recently identified as the cause of serious damage in the Lake States. During the summer and fall of 1965, a survey was conducted in Upper Michigan and northern Wisconsin to determine the distribution and intensity of Scleroderris canker in 2- to 10-year old red and jack pine plantations on National Forest land. The results showed that Scleroderris canker was widespread over the Ottawa and Hiawatha National Forests in...AuthorsDarroll D. Skilling, Charles E. CordellKeywordsSourceResearch Paper NC-3. - Four years of service testing 90 red oak pallets showed that those made with predrilled air-dry deckboards and green stringers gave better service and cost less to maintain than pallets made entirely from either green or air-dry lumber.AuthorsDaniel E. - Eleven out of 24 conifer species planted in western Iowa appear to be adapted to local conditions. Success increases with increase in depth to free carbonates in soil.AuthorsGayne G. - Describes a typical logging system used in the Lake and Northeastern States, discusses each step in the operation, and presents a simple method for designing and efficient logging system for such an operation. Points out that a system should always be built around the key piece of equipment, which is usually the skidder. Specific equipment types and their production capabilities and costs are also discussed.AuthorsR.B. GardnerKeywordsSourceResearch Paper NC-7. - This report presents timber resource statistics from 1962 and compares them with those from 1953 and 1936. It contains 17 line illustrations and 50 tables that deal with forest area, number of trees, timber volume and growth, desirable cut, timber product output, and timber cut statistics. It also includes a 30-year projection of timber growth and cut. The comparisons shows that timber volume has increased 37% since 1953, as Minnesota's second-growth forests approach maturity. Aspen dominates the resource in nearly all aspects. Though the acreage of commercial forest land is slightly less...AuthorsRobert N. StoneKeywordsSourceResource Bulletin NC-1.
