We conducted research at the Starkey Experimental Forest and Range in northeastern Oregon, USA, during 1993-2000. Climate-induced changes in the tundra fire regime are expected to alter shrub abundance and distribution across the Arctic. However, little is known about how fire may indirectly impact shrub performance by altering mycorrhizal symbionts. - Although critical for the functioning of ecosystems, fungi are poorly known in highlatitude regions. This paper summarizes the results of the first genetic diversity assessments of Russula and Lactarius, two of the most diverse and abundant fungal genera in Alaska.
