- This report describes the primary meteorological station at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest (elev. 426 m, lat. 44°15' N., long. 122°10' W.) in the Willamette National Forest, the automatic digital data logger, sensors, and data-processing procedures used in measuring air temperature, dewpoint temperature, windspeed, precipitation, and solar radiation. The quasi-Mediterranean climate has mild, moist winters and warm, dry summers. Average daily air temperature in July is 17.8 °C; in January, 0.6 °C. - This report is a synthesis of results from an 11-year study of the effects of increasing intensities of range management strategies on herbage production, water resources, economics, and associated resources-such as wood fiber and recreation-in Grant County, Oregon. - Timber and deer managers have struggled through years of increasing demands and growing conflicts in the interior of Western North America. - A test of 10 provenances was established in 1969 on the central coast of Oregon. The provenances tested included Juneau, Alaska, and Sandpoint, Idaho, in addition to eight well-spaced locations in Oregon, Washington, and the southern end of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Periodic measurements through 15 years of plantation development revealed differences among provenances in height, diameter, and height/diameter ratio. - The local (Forest-level or local-area) demand for stumpage can be derived from estimates of regional supply and demand. The derivation of local demand is justified when the local timber economy is similar to the regional timber economy; a simple regression of local on nonlocal prices can be used as an empirical test of similarity between local and regional economies. - Provisional seed zones and breeding zones were developed for white pine (Pinus monticola Dougl. ex D. Don) in the Cascade Range of western Washington and Oregon. Recommendations were based on genetic variation patterns obtained by evaluating genotypes of trees from 115 locations. Genotypes controlling growth vigor and growth rhythm were assessed in common gardens. - A long-term study to determine the effects of several methods of timber harvest on the distribution of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) was begun in the early 1970's in the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon. The study area was an upper slope spruce-fir type with harvest designed to compare changes in elk use, as measured by pellet-group densities under small-patch or large-block clearcuts, partial cuts, and uncut controls. - Forty felled dominant and codominant Pacific silver fir trees (Abies amabilis Dougl. ex Forbes) from 39 locations provided the basis for height-age and site index curves. Trees were from upper slope forests of the Cascade Range in Oregon and Washington. Trees ranged in age from 100 to 300 years and were identified by their height-growth trend as free growing throughout their lives. - Responses of stream chemistry parameters, nitrate-N (NO3-N), phosphate (PO4), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), sodium (Na), and hydrogen ion activity (pH) were measured on 13 wildland watersheds managed at four different grazing strategies. - Radiotelemetry studies of spotted owl (Strix occidentalis) ranges and habitat-use must be designed efficiently to estimate parameters needed for a sample of individuals sufficient to describe the population.
