The end product of recreation management is a diverse range of opportunities from which people can derive various experiences. This paper offers a framework for managing recreation opportunities based on six physical, biological, social, and managerial factors that, when combined, can be utilized by recreationists to obtain diverse experiences.

This report presents statistics from a 1973 inventory of timber resources of Douglas County and from a 1974 inventory of timber resources of Coos, Curry, Jackson, and Josephine Counties, Oregon. Tables presented are of forest area and of timber volume, growth, and mortality.

Manmade structures on rangelands provide specialized habitats for some species. These habitats and how they function as specialized habitat features are examined in this publication. The relationships of the wildlife of the Great Basin to such structures are detailed.

Expected impacts on the ecosystem and nontimber benefits (that is, people's use of the resources—recreation, hunting, fishing, swimming, etc.) resulting from alternative timber harvest scheduling policies are identified and evaluated for the Mount Hood National Forest. Environmental criteria are established and used in evaluations of timber harvest and management data.

An operational test of a small, prototype running skyline yarder was conducted early in 1978. Test results indicate that this yarder concept promises a low cost, high performance system for harvesting small logs where skyline methods are indicated. Timber harvest by thinning took place on 12 uphill and 2 downhill skyline roads, and clearcut harvesting was performed on 4 uphill skyline roads. Skyline roads were spaced about 46 meters (150 feet) apart and were up to 335 meters (1,100 feet) long. Delays caused by the yarder were insignificant. Production as high as 343 logs per day was achieved.

Ecological and management information for the coastal western hemlock-Sitka spruce forests is summarized in this report. Areas of emphasis include logging methods, silvicultural systems, natural and artificial regeneration, residue disposal, weed control, thinning, growth and yield, and forest protection. Consideration is given site protection and nontimber values as well a s timber management.

Relative density is a measure of tree crowding compared to a reference level such as normal density. This stand attribute, when compared to management standards, indicates adequacy of stocking. The Pacific Coast Forest Survey Unit assesses the relative density of each stand sampled by summing the individual density contributions of each tree tallied, thus quantifying the effects of mixed species, mixed age, and irregular spacing on total stand density. This report presents an overview of the technology of converting wood to energy and the availability of wood. The first section describes fuel values and significant processes used to generate various energy products from wood. Physical, technical, and economic availability of the wood resource is discussed in the second section. The paper concludes with an outline of some critical problems in handling wood and some socioeconomic factors that impact the production of energy from wood. An extensive bibliography covers topics discussed in the paper.

Vegetative propagation trials were conducted with stem, root, and rhizome cuttings of Alnus, Arctostaphylos, Ledum, Populus, Salix, Shepherdia, Vaccinium, and Viburnum. With the exception of Alnus incana and Shepherdia canadensis, stem cuttings of all species produced some roots. Softwood stem cuttings of Salix bebbiana and Viburnum edule rooted much better than hardwood cuttings of the same species; hardwood and softwood stem cuttings of other species were about equal in performance.
