- The Soil Conservation Service is in the early stages of testing many species of Eucalyptus or windbreaks. Over 260 different species have been collected. The pre-planting selection criteria and process is described as well as the test conditions and procedures. Some sources of information on the use of the Eucalypts may be misleading through overgeneralization. Early results support the need for greater communication and testing of a wide variety of species and provenances in California.AuthorsGary L. - Recent reviews have suggested that tree species are the most variable of organisms, as measured by proportion of polymorphic loci or average heterozygosity (Hamrick, 1979; Hamrick et al., 1979). - The connection between fitness and heterozygosity has eluded geneticists for decades. - This historical sketch is presented as a Volunteer in National Forest project. It was started in November, 1982 when then Director Robert Callahan asked me if I would be interested in researching and writing a history--both factual and anecdotal. - A fundamental difference between a canal and a natural stream is structure. Structure includes all the typical anomalies of natural streams that deflect the general downstream flow, such as bends, bars, bedrock knobs, boulders, landslide deposits, and large woody debris. This results in the storage of watershed products in the channel, and in a great heterogeneity in depth, velocity, stream gradient, and substrate conditions. - Abstract - Landslides related to clearcut logging are a significant source of erosion in the mountains of northwestern California. Forest managers, therefore, frequently must include assessments of landslide risk in their land-use plans. A quantitative method is needed to predict such risk over large areas of rugged mountainous terrain. - Professional and official attitudes and reports discourage the use of exotics in the North-west. Not only will the small woodland owner fail to make a reasonable return on his investment in growing native trees, he may not live long enough to harvest a crop. Short rotation alternatives are sought by using certain species of Eucalypts. Adaptability of such species is sought by out-planting plots in Douglas County. - A procedure has been developed for estimating the economic cost of initial attack and large-fire suppression. The procedure uses a per-unit approach to estimate total attack and suppression costs on an input-by-input basis. Fire management inputs (FMIs) are the production units used. All direct and indirect costs are charged to the FMIs. With the unit approach, all cost information relevant to an FMI is integrated as one cost rate, thereby making simulation cost aggregation easier.
