- Most ornithological studies in Southwestern ponderosa pine forests have yielded results that are applicable only to the specific location and particular conditions of the study areas (for example, Green 1979 and Hurlbert 1984). In addition, varying interpretation of similar study results by investigators has limited our ability to extend or synthesize research results from Southwestern ponderosa pine forests beyond the scope of any individual study. - This paper discusses an experiment in which the value for an unfamiliar environmental good, whose total value has a large nonuse component, is verified using a revealed-preference method. As we were unable to observe preferences via an incentive compatible mechanism, we collected voluntary contributions toward the provision of the good. We make a case for interpreting these contributions as a ‘‘theoretical lower bound’’ on the value of the public good and estimate the lower bound. - Mapping of biodiversity elements to expose gaps in. conservation networks has become a common strategy in nature-reserve design. - Dichotomous choice contingent valuation surveys frequently elicit multiple values in a single questionnaire. - The scientific name, Strix occidentalis, translates as "owl of the west," an appropriate name for this inhabitant of western forests. The subspecies found in Arizona, the Mexican Spotted Owl, is S. o. lucida - "light" or "bright" owl of the west. This race is generally lighter in color than Spotted Owls elsewhere in the range. - We studied microhabitats of Merriam‘s turkey (Meleagris gallopavo merriami) brood hens in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) ecosystem in South Dakota from 1986 to 1988. Cluster analysis indicated three groups of microhabitats, open-shrub, open-grasslforb and forest, based on vegetation characteristics at sites selected by brood hens. - A First Order Fire Effects Model (FOFEM) was developed to predict the direct consequences of prescribed fire and wildfire.
