- In view of the somewhat contradictory reports on the preservation of seeds at low temperatures (1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 ) and the agricultural importance of seed preservation and revitalization the following study on seed preservation and revitalization was undertaken. This study, started in 1954, was designed to explore general condition for preserving seed of !ong leaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill. ) which are extremely sensitive to adverse storage conditions; to increase germinability by breaking dormancy; and to revitalize age seeds. The idea for the pre ervation of seeds was to apply...AuthorsSocrates A. Kaloyereas, William Mann, Julian C. MillerSourceEconomy BotanyYear1961
- Variations in dry-matter content of need les, found highly useful by Langlet (1936-37, 1959) as an indicator of racial variation in Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), appears to offer little or no promise of similar utility with loblolly pine (P. taeda L.)AuthorsB.F. - A study was made from 1946 to 1956 of the effect of prescribed burning on soils beneath loblolly pine stands growing in the level, lower coastal plain of the Southeastern United States. Data were collected on two experimental areas located about 30 miles apart in South Carolina. The sites are comparable in that they have similar topography and surface soil texture. Annual and periodic fires over a ten-year period had no significant influence on the physical properties of the soil. Mineral elements, nitrogen, and organic matter tended to increase in the surface 4 inches of the burned plots....AuthorsLouis J. Metz, Thomas Lotti, Ralph A. - In this age of machine planting and airplane seedint, forest regeneration by self-sown seeds ( natural regenration) is seldom in the limelight. The notion is prevalent that our future forests will be largely spewed forth from the rear of an airplane or set out in precise rows by machine. Perhaps this is so. However, before we rocket off to explore the forests of another planet, let us dwell for a moment on the possibilities of natural regeneration on at least some of our southern pinelands. This may be a good idea in the face of some retrenchment and cost-cutting now current in many...AuthorsThomas LottiSourceProceedings of the 10th Annual Forest SymposiumYear1961

- Since 1954, when the huge study of geographic ource of outhern pine eed got underway, plantations scattered throughout the South have been te ting theses concerning the po ibility of racial variation in outhern pines caused by temperature zone, latitude, and longitude.1 Now, after 6 years, a plantation of longleaf pine in Nansemond County, Virginia, e -tablished to see if racial variation is primarily associated with difference in temperature, has some interesting data to reportAuthorsPhilip C. - The U.S. Forest Service has started a laboratory study with the ultimate objective of determining model laws for fire behavior. The study includes an examination of the effect of such variables as species of wood, density of wood, moisture content, size of fuel particle, spacing, dimensions of fuel bed, wind, and slope on the rate of spread of fire and the partition of energy. Fuel beds in the form of cribs made of square cross-section wood sticks were chosen for diagnostic studies. The crib is ignited at one end and moved in such a manner that the flame is kept in a fixed position in...AuthorsWallace L. FonsYear1961
