- Tropical forest canopies cycle vast amounts of carbon, yet we still have a limited understanding of how these critical ecosystems will respond to climate warming. We implemented in situ leaf-level + 3°C experimental warming from the understory to the upper canopy of two Puerto Rican tropical tree species, Guarea guidoniaand Ocotea sintenisii. - A new species of Pronura from the Luquillo Experimental Forest on Northeastern Puerto Rico is described and illustrated.Pronura yunquensis sp. nov. differs from other Neotropical Pronura in the absence of eyes and can be separated fromother species of the genus by the presence of a head tubercle (De), the displacement of Di1 in Abd IV and the fusedtubercles De+DL in Abd V. - Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. - This study analyzes multiyear data recorded by 21 stations along an elevation gradient (0–1045 m a.s.l.) in the Luquillo Mountains on the rainfall and the rainwater chemistry. The totalionic concentration and the rainwater volume exhibited an inverse exponential relationship, withthe correlation coefficients ranging from –0.66 to –0.90. - The Puerto Rico Breeding Bird Atlas (PRBBA) project collected and summarized information on the timing of breeding and geographic distribution of 130 breeding bird species on Puerto Rico, and its associated satellite islands and cays. Fieldwork coordinated by the Puerto Rican Ornithological Society (SOPI) involved 344 volunteer observers who contributed to more than 45,500 individual observations of birds from 2004 through 2009. - The Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF) has a long history of research on tropical forestry, ecology, and conservation, dating as far back as the early 19th Century. - Within a forest, differences in landform spatial variation (i.e., geomorphic settings: valley, slope, and ridge) could affect the species richness and distribution present at a particular site.
