- Oak forests of the Lake States are described, and guides for appraising sites are presented. Cultural practices to improve the productivity of existing stands and cutting methods to regenerate oak are discussed. The multiple-use potential of oak forests is emphasized.AuthorsJohn L. Arend, Harold F. ScholzKeywordsSourceResearch Paper NC-31. St. Paul, MN: U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Service, North Central Forest Experiment StationYear1969
- Describes the weather patterns in northern Minnesota as related to prescribed burning. The prevailing wind direction, average wind speed, most persistent wind direction, and average Buildup Index are considered in making recommendations.AuthorsRodney W. SandoKeywordsSourceResearch Paper NC-28. St. Paul, MN: U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Service, North Central Forest Experiment StationYear1969
- Many resource managers feel that a high percentage of excursions to forested areas are planned with the objective of seeing wildlife in mind. However, a study of campers in the Superior National Forest did not show wildlife to be a primary attraction of the area, although it was an important supplementary attraction.AuthorsDavid. W. - If the volume of walnut veneer logs and saw logs received at processing plants from Indiana forests is known, conversion factors developed in this paper can be used to determine how much timber was cut to provide these logs and the kinds of timber that were cut (sawtimber, cull trees, trees on nonforest land, etc.).AuthorsJames E. Blyth, Edwin Kallio, John C. CallahanKeywordsSourceResearch Paper NC-33. St. Paul, MN: U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Service, North Central Forest Experiment StationYear1969
- Response to thinning in six red pine plantations in Lower Michigan supported previous findings by showing basal area growth to vary little over a wide range of residual densities. Furthermore, the method of selecting trees for removal in the first thinning had little or no influence on basal area growth. However, the immediate effect of thinning on average stand diameter depends on thinning method and the proportion of the stand cut, and diameter growth after thinning depends on residual density. The residual densities tested range from 30 to over 200 square feet of basal area per acres....AuthorsJohn H. CooleyKeywordsSourceResearch Paper NC-35. - This paper examines the importance of various climatic variables before seven well-known fires of the past. Also, the 1871 synoptic weather pattern preceding the Chicago-Peshtigo-Michigan fire disaster is examined in detail.AuthorsDonald A. Haines, Rodney W. SandoKeywordsSourceResearch Paper NC-34. - The most durable and practical rustic signs are made of clear, heart, vertical-grain incense cedar or redwood boards for slat signs, and medium-density overlaid plywood for large signs.AuthorsGlenn A. - Most of the picnic structures in six north-central states studied were constructed of wood. Service life of structure varied greatly. Vandalism and decay were the major reasons for repairing and replacing picnic tables. More than half the tables were made by the recreation agencies themselves. These results describe a market that existing and potential wood industries may be overlooking. Results will enable potential and existing manufacturers and suppliers to better delineate markets.AuthorsJerry A. SescoKeywordsSourceResearch Paper NC-30. - The recently completed Second Forest Survey of Indiana shows that the State's timber volume has increased by one-fourth in the 17 years since the previous survey. Timber volume by county is presented.AuthorsArnold J. OstromKeywordsSourceResearch Note NC-58 Revised.
