Project Description

Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) is the Nation's forest census. The national FIA program conducts an annual survey of forest status and trends using consistent protocols in each state since 2000.

The Pacific Northwest Forest Inventory and Analysis (PNW-FIA) program summarizes and assesses trends in forest conditions in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Hawai‘i, and U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands. Data for California, Oregon, Washington, and Coastal Alaska are updated annually. Interior Alaska, Hawai‘i, and U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands are inventoried periodically.

Inventory data is publicly available for download. On the national FIA Data and Tools page users can access raw data or use several table creation tools to create custom data summaries.

Alaska:

Typically, annual FIA data are summarized for each state. However, due to the complexity of implementing an annual inventory cycle throughout the vast and diverse forests in Alaska, the statewide FIA program has been separated into two broad regions (Coastal and Interior). Note that efforts are underway, yet interior Alaska datasets may not be fully integrated into the National FIA Data Mart due to the unique sampling method employed.

• Coastal Alaska: Annual inventory began in 2004, with the 2nd plot measurement cycle beginning in 2015.

Hawai‘i:

Typically, FIA data are collected annually summarized for each state. However, we operate a periodic inventory in Hawai‘i where data on all plots are collected in a 3-5 year window before being summarized rather than an annual inventory cycle where a subset of plots are visited each year.

• The first inventory cycle in Hawai‘i was completed between 2010 and 2015, and the second cycle was completed between 2019-2022. Additional field measurements within two experimental forests on the island of Hawai‘i were collected through a partnership.
