- Validation studies of the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), a stand projection model widely used to predict carbon outcomes of alternative forest management strategies, have found departures from observed forest growth for several FVS variants in the western USA. - This report updates estimates presented in Forest Resources of the Tanana Unit, Alaska: 2018 (Cahoon and Baer 2022) from forests in the Tanana unit of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) interior Alaska inventory. In September 2023, the FIA program published a new modeling system for predicting tree volume, biomass, and carbon attributes called the National Scale Volume and Biomass (NSVB) framework. - Mechanical thinning is often prescribed in dry coniferous forests to reduce stand density, ladder fuels, and canopy fuels before using prescribed burning to manage surface fuels. - Native bee populations are declining worldwide, threatening both natural ecosystems and agriculture as these insects pollinate about 80 percent of all flowering plants.
