- Statistics on forest area, total gross and net volumes, and annual net growth and mortality are presented from the 1980-82 timber inventory of the Chatham Area, Tongass National Forest, Alaska. - The objective of the study was to develop models that predict lumber and veneer recovery as a function of young-growth log characteristics. Empirical lumber and veneer recovery data for logs cut from more than 300 young-growth Douglas-fir trees were used in model development. - We radiotracked 9 adult spotted owls (Strix occidentalis) in the southern Oregon Coast Ranges for 6-12 months. Owls selected home ranges that emphasized old growth within the landscape. Minimum convex polygon home ranges of 4 pairs were 1,153-3,945 ha and contained 726-1,062 ha of old growth. The percentages of. the home ranges in old growth were 25-73%. Home-range size expanded significantly (P < 0.05) with decreasing proportions of old growth (r = -0.83). The amount of old growth in the pair home ranges was less variable than was home-range size. - Counting tracks to obtain an index of abundance for species difficult to capture offers a promise of efficiency and effectiveness when broad surveys of populations are necessary. Sand plots, smoked kymograph paper, and, recently, smoked aluminum plates have been used to record tracks(Raphael et al., 1986; Taylor and Raphael, 1988). - An Aget Cyclone dust collector and peripheral equipment were fieldtested for use in vacuuming large quantities of pollen from 30- to 40-foot trees in a Douglas-fir seed orchard. The Cyclone machine (Model 20SN31P) operated without a vacuum bag or filter device, so no blockage or reduction in vacuum efficiency occurred when large volumes of pollen were collected. We compared the composition and density of the on-site vegetation, seed bank, and seed rain of three geomorphic and successional surfaces along third- and fifth-order streams on the western slope of the central Cascade Range in Oregon.The on-site vegetation generally was dominated by tree species, the seed bank by herb species, and the seed rain by tree and herb species. - Methods describing how to sample aquatic and semiaquatic amphibians in small streams and headwater habitats in the Pacific Northwest are presented. We developed a technique that samples 10-meter stretches of selected streams, which was adequate to detect presence or absence of amphibian species and provided sample sizes statistically sufficient to compare abundance of individual species among streams. - The 1987 inventory of the forest resources of the Kenai Peninsula was designed to assess the impact of the spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby)) on the timberland component of the forest resource. Estimates of timberland area, volumes of timber, and growth and mortality of timber were developed. These estimates of timber resource quantities were also categorized by owner.
