- To quantify between-species interactions, we measured and compared survival and growth of planted Douglas-fir and associated planted and volunteer red alder at a location on the west side of the Cascade Range in Washington. The planted alder were wildlings dug either from a nearby area or from a distant, coastal site and interplanted into a 3-year-old Douglas-fir plantation. The volunteer alder became established in year 1; these were cut at year 3 or 7 depending on the regime tested. - A commercial thinning study was undertaken in a 30-year-old stand, pre-commercially thinned at 15 years of age, at Cascade Head Experimental Forest on the Oregon coast. Measurements obtained after three different thinning treatments are presented and include stand volume, basal area, current growth rate, scar damage, crown ratio, and sapwood radius. - Cones systematically collected in 1983 from eight Douglas-fir seed orchards in western Washington and Oregon yielded large numbers of common molds. Fungi isolated from apparently healthy, developing cones were similar to those from necrotic cones. Necrosis in cones aborted in early stages of development was apparently not associated with pathogenic fungi or bacteria. Environmental factors appeared to account for early cone abortions, although on-site temperatures were not recorded, nor were those fungi isolated from aborted cones tested for pathogenicity. - The Grays Harbor Federal Sustained Yield Unit (U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service) was established in 1949 to enhance the economic stability of the forest products industry and dependent communities in Grays Harbor County, Washington. Provisions of the unit's charter require that all logs harvested from the Quinault Ranger District of the Olympic National Forest receive primary processing in Grays Harbor County. - The 15-year growth response from a levels-of-growing-stock study in an even-aged western larch (Larix occidentalis Nutt.) stand, first thinned from above and below at age 55, was measured in northeastern Oregon. Basal area and volume growth increased with stand density for both thinning methods, whereas diameter growth decreased. - This progress report reviews the history and status of the cooperative levels-of-growing-stock study in coast Douglas-fir, begun in 1961, in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.
