The 15-year growth response from a levels-of-growing-stock study in an even-aged western larch (Larix occidentalis Nutt.) stand, first thinned from above and below at age 55, was measured in northeastern Oregon. This progress report reviews the history and status of the cooperative levels-of-growing-stock study in coast Douglas-fir, begun in 1961, in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. It presents new analyses, including comparisons among some installations. Data now available are primarily from the site II installations, which are approaching completion of the study. Because the role of tree and shrub seed is indispensable in the renewal of forests and ranges, their identity and quality are critically important. This guide briefly covers recommended practices for maintaining the identity of seeds, for sampling them, and for testing them for quality. Practices associated with the testing and use of tree seed have developed over many years, whereas those for shrub seed are just developing. Selected references, excerpts from official seed testing rules, addresses of seed testing laboratories, and sources of information for shrub seed are included.

Using the pellet-group sampling method, we concluded that migrating mule deer showed no preference in use between two ratios of curlleaf mountain-mahogany cover and openings on a northern California transition range. Where there is a need to develop forage openings in transition habitats dominated by dense thickets of curlleaf mountain-mahogany, manipulation of cover levels within the extremes tested in this study should provide sound management options.

Employment and earnings in Virginia's forest products industry, like those of most Southern States, increased between 1970 and 1980. Furthermore, Virginia's share of the Nation's forest products employment and earnings increased during this period. In 1980, the wood furniture segment accounted for the largest share of the industry's employment, but paper and allied products accounted for the largest share of earnings. In 1977, pulp and allied products had higher productivity than either lumber and wood products or wood furniture.

An equation is presented that estimates the relative stocking capacity of forest land in Siskiyou County, California, from the amount of precipitation and the presence of significant indicator plants. The equation is a toot for identifying sites incapable of supporting normal stocking. Estimated relative stocking capacity may be used to discount normal yields to levels that these sites can produce.

Sampling rules and estimation procedures are described for a new cruise design that was developed for 50-year timber sales in Alaska. An example is given of the rate redetermination cruise and analysis for the 1984-1989 period of the Ketchikan Pulp Company sale. In addition, methodology is presented for an alternative sampling technique of sampling with probability proportional to size, sample size calculations, and volume equation development.
