- Logging costs were developed in a study of residue removal to specified levels in each of three size classes: 1/4 to 3, 3.1 to 9, and over 9 inches in diameter. These levels were determined by an interdisciplinary team during initial sale planning and represented levels that would be desired to attain without slash burning. Cable yarding was specified. - Radial growth reduction related to amount of tree defoliation was studied following a severe tussock moth outbreak. Growth sharply declined the year after defoliation began, and amount of decline was proportional to percent defoliation. - Twelve different nitrogen (N) fertilizer treatments were tested on potted western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) seedlings. Fertilizers affected soil N and pH, and growth and foliar chemical composition of seedlings. Urea plus N-Serve and sulfur-coated urea appear more promising for promoting growth than other fertilizers tested. - Effects of plastic mesh cages designed to protect Douglas-fir seedlings from animals were evaluated in western Oregon. In two tests over 5-year periods, caging increased survival by 0 and 13 percent and increased height growth by 0.8 and 1.2 feet compared with uncaged trees. - The 1980 Resources Planning Act Timber Assessment and Program prepared in response to provisions of the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974 (as amended by the National Forest Management Act of 1976) contains regional projections of average stumpage prices that are potentially useful in national forest planning. Their usefulness can be improved if the average prices are separated by species. This separation process depends on assumptions about changes in relative importance (as measured by volume) of the various species.
