- Early in 1979 we surveyed forest managers and researchers in a number of northern countries to identify topics in forest management of circumpolar interest. Responses most frequently centered on problems of forest regeneration and related harvesting practices. - Containerized Sitka spruce, [Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.] were inoculated at sowing with pure cultures of either Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch, Laccaria laccata (Scop. ex Fr.) - Of 15 ectomycorrhizal fungi inoculated onto five container-grown conifer species (Larix occidentalis, Pinus contorta, P. ponderosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and Tsuga heterophylla), only Laccaria laccata and Cenococcum geophilum consistently formed ectomycorrhizae on all conifer hosts. Percentages of mycorrhizal feeder roots were generally high, ranging from 86 on L. occidentalis to 94.5 percent on T. heterophylla for L. laccata and from 48.1 to 81.8 percent on these respective hosts for C. geophilum. - Predictive equations for duff reduction and mineral soil exposure by prescribed fire are presented. An explanation is suggested for the dependence of duff combustion on surface fuel combustion. Surface fire duration and fuel moisture estimates of the National Fire-Danger Rating 1,000-hour timelag are the best predictors for reduction in moist duff. - Identification of opportunities for silvicultural treatment from inventory data is an important objective of Renewable Resources Evaluation in the Pacific Northwest. - The construction and existence of forest roads, landings, and decking areas may have significant effects on anadromous fish habitat . Major effects discussed in this paper are increased sedimentation from transportation networks, the hindrance to fish migration of drainage structures, and possible changes in water quality from road stabilization additives. - Programs for a programable calculator and a desk-top computer are provided for quickly determining yarding cost and comparing the economics of alternative yarding systems. The programs emphasize the importance of the relationship between production rate and machine rate, which is the hourly cost of owning and operating yarding equipment. In addition to generating the data required for analyzing the cost of a yarding operation, the desk top program plots the yarding cost versus production rate curve.
