- Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis subsp. occidentalis) is an important invader of range lands in central and eastern Oregon. - In 1975, the Washington timber harvest declined for the 2d year to 6.2 billion board feet, 10 percent below 1974, and the lowest level in 8 years. - What must be the world's most magnificent pool of forest genes has timbered our Pacific slopes. Why else do the tallest firs, pines, spruces, hemlocks, redwoods, and larches all rise along the Pacific Coast of North America? - Bush penstemon (Penstemon fruticosus (Pursh) Greene), an attractive ground cover on east Cascade slopes, appears to survive under low fertility, xeric conditions. These plant characteristics are desirable for revegetating severely disturbed areas. Seedling response to fertilization was tested to find if growth rates could be increased to provide quicker ground cover with new plantings. Bush penstemon does respond to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization under greenhouse conditions. - Large amounts of logging residue are generated each year in timber harvest operations in old-growth forests in the Douglas-fir region of western Washington and western Oregon. Economic availability of each piece, however, depends on its size, condition, location, and on the existence of markets, with an adequate price to cover costs. - The 1974 Oregon timber harvest of 8.36 billion board feet was 9.2 percent, or 0.84 billion board feet, below the 1973 harvest. - The hydrology of small forest streams in western Oregon varies by time and space in terms of both streamflow and channel hydraulics. Overland flow rarely occurs on undisturbed soils. Instead, water is transmitted rapidly through soils to stream channels by displacement of stored soil water. Drainage networks expand and contract according to the interaction between precipitation characteristics and soil's capability to store and transmit water. - This publication provides silviculturists and managers of utility rights-of-way with a description and evaluation of available helicopter spray application equipment. Modified conventional equipment will reduce drift of sprays in normal carriers and apply various high-viscosity sprays. Specialized spray systems have found limited use in forestry; they are more commonly used on utility rights-of-way.
